Baby, it’s cold outside! This is awesome! No bugs! No spider webs! The poison ivy and brush is dead! Winter is also a great time to spot wildlife. Without the leaves on the trees, it’s easier to see wildlife. Eagles nest in the winter and are very active in Northeast Kansas.
We recommend dressing in layers for winter hiking. Start with a base layer of long johns or winter running tights with a long john shirt or winter compression shirt. Wear fleece, wool or synthetic poly blend fabrics. Wearing this layer of poly-blend fabrics close to your skin will keep you warm and wick any moisture away from your body. Cotton holds moisture and takes longer to dry it is NOT recommended.
Thick, cushioned socks: wool, polypropylene, or synthetic. You could consider a thin “liner” sock combined with medium to thick outer sock.
Follow your base layer with more layers, preferably more fleece! Finish with a wind/water resistant jacket on top and some wind resistant pants on the bottom – any pants will work but wind and water resistant are handy. Again, non-cotton fabrics – fleece, wool or synthetic poly-blend fabrics are best. They dry faster and move moisture away from your body.
We also suggest using hiking poles. Winter weather can create slippery spots and surprising places. If you know you will be hiking on an uneven trail, take your hiking poles to help you maintain balance on difficult sections.
Synthetic gloves or mittens – mittens are preferred for warmth. Wear a warm hat: fleece, wool or synthetic or possibly a head band that covers your ears. It’s also great to have something to cover your face, even a bandana helps.
It’s also handy to bring your backpack to put the layers into as you warm up along the trail! Depending on the distance you plan to hike, be sure to take water, snacks, a fully charged phone for emergencies and a friend!
Join us and the rest of the nation for a FIRST DAY HIKE! We will be helping out at the Perry State Park First Day Hike on January 1st, 2018 at 10am for a 2.5 mile hike! Start your 2018 with a nature connection! Free, and open to all ages and genders – 2.5 mile hike with no registration required. Show up with your people! 😀
Are you ready for some longer hikes? Are you thinking about joining us for our 4th Annual Dirty Girls Go All the Way? Sign up ASAP if that’s the case!
We love the Perry Lake Trail and would love to have more people access this great resource. Thanks to the Kansas Trails Council VOLUNTEERS for creating and maintaining it!
If you can’t join us for Dirty Girls Go All the Way but would be interested in hiking the PLT, you can use this list to find gear suggestions for day hikes or longer hikes. DGA will host several hikes of various distances on the PLT throughout the 2018 Adventure Season – gather your gear and watch for event details when the 2018 Schedule is released in December.
When you hike the PLT, you can expect to see some gorgeous views, some wildlife and to traverse a variety of terrains. The PLT includes rough, rocky trail with steep inclines and declines often through timbered land. In addition, you will find yourself hiking through pastured sections along the edge of the lake shore. You can find a map of the PLT here, please note that while they have the PLT rated as EASY – we don’t know why that is…. while there is significant variation in the trail, many sections are extremely DIFFICULT and the majority of the trail is HARD. Be prepared! Take some time to explore the possibilities at www.GetOutdoorsKansas.org, take some time to explore this site for additional Kansas Adventures!
When you hike with DGA, we provide some amenities … a guide with knowledge of the trail, a trail sweep to bring up the rear – NO DIRTY GIRL LEFT BEHIND! We also carry first aid kits, we often provide water refills and a bus ride so you can hike one way instead of out and back. DGA also likes to end a hike with some time around the campfire with friends.
If you aren’t hiking with DGA you’ll need to plan an out and back hike or arrange a car drop for one way hikes.
This is a list of suggested items to bring to the Annual Dirty Girls Go All the Way hike on October 21st and 22nd – you can sign up HERE! Remember, that while this particular event includes one night of primitive camping on the trail, we don’t carry our camping gear with us. We set up our basecamp and the Dirty Bus will transport us to the trailhead so that we can hike back with just our day packs. The Dirty Minions will bring us our lunch at the mid point. If you want to join us but don’t want to “go all the way” sign up for either Saturday or Sunday and go “half way” with us!
Things to bring for camp:
For All the Way, there is a Vault toilet available and DGA will bring the insta-hot water maker for hand and face washing.
Folding lawn chair
Personal care items
Comfy camp clothes
Don’t forget any daily medications you might need
DGA provides the fire, the food and the coffee when we host an event so when you’re not with us you’ll need all of the stuff to take care of camp! 😉
Things to take on your hike:
Hydration backpack with a capacity of at least 2 Liters of water or more (bring it full to start your hike)
Snacks for the trail – be sure to include both protein and sugar or carbs – we like trail mixes, tortillas rolled with nut butters, apples, dried fruits and chocolate
Bring any medication that you might need on trail – epi-pen, insulin, etc.
Personal comfort items for along the trail (things we take… lip balm, wipes for your hands, face or bum, eye drops if you have dry eyes or allergies of any type, if you are prone to blisters bring moleskin)
A fully charged smart phone with GPS capacity – in airplane mode or off to reserve battery
A copy of the trail map
Hiking poles – many prefer to hike with hiking poles to provide support for balance
If you aren’t with DGA, or even if you are, you should consider basic first aid supplies.
What to wear on the PLT:
Long pants – this is a backwoods trail, there are stickers, stick tights and brush that you WILL contact
Wool blend socks
Hiking shoes or boots
Layers – we suggest tri-blend fabrics that dry quickly
Fleece jacket or rain gear depending on the forecast

It was a rainy week. The ground was wet and the air was cold. It was time to hike 29 miles in two days! This was a challenge and a joy enjoyed by Dirty Girls and other slightly strange people! Joking aside, it turned out to be a gorgeous weekend! All told, with some extra steps included, the fitbit wearing Dirty Girls agreed that our total mileage for the weekend was 32.75 miles – 18 on Saturday and 14.75 on Sunday!! WooHoo! Here are the pictures and a couple of cool stories to go along with them! Here are some pictures and highlights from our weekend! The Redy2Party Bus picked us up right on time at 8:30 Saturday morning. It was a crisp and cool morning, but bright and beautiful!
We had a great view of Perry Lake as we hiked the trail along the edge of the lake. We observed many migratory birds, including my favorite American White Pelican aka Black Wing-tipped Pelican. They are super cool! Check them out here! Their wingspan ranges from 6 to 9 feet!
Those of us at the front of the line enjoyed a few special sights. First, I fell within the first 10 minutes on the trail in an amazing and dramatic crash. WOW! The bruise is still really painful. Luckily, I’m the Dirty Mutha so I kept going! Second, we saw two foxes running and playing in the woods. When they saw us, they changed direction rapidly! They were awesome. (I had my camera in my hand and didn’t even raise it to my face!)
These are just a few of the brave and adventurous women who are members of tribe Dirty Girl! They looked a little more fresh and energetic at the beginning of the adventure that they did at the end but they seemed proud, confident and accomplished event though they were blistered and tired out! Most were covered with stick tights, poison ivy oils and some small amount of sweat along with their glory!
This is one of the gajillion interesting, weird and pretty cool fungus we saw along the trail. It is spiky and cool. It’s a puffer type fungi and when dry it will poof out spores.
The blue flashes mark the trail. If there are two stacked blue spots, they mark a turn. This trail is maintained by volunteers so while we hiked, we sprayed new signs along the path. I also have lovely blue overspray on my camera and watchband!
Dirty Girls had time for conversation and contemplation both while maintaining a steady pace over a rough and tough terrain. The diversity of our group is what makes it great. Women from all over northeast Kansas joined us for this adventure, coming together with determination and humor to enjoy the weekend together.
One of the things I have loved the most about this amazing adventure has been meeting and getting to know so many determined, adventurous, interesting, caring, motivated women. I have enjoyed quality friendships with a few women in my lifetime but this summer I have been able to add many more – more than I ever thought I would find in my lifetime. Some, I haven’t even begun to know but I can tell that they have much to offer. I am eager to continue to grow these friendships. They are enriching, energizing and inspiring to me!
This awesome dog – tribal name Dirty Dog – joined us for most of day 2. We attempted to track down her original owner and left information at the shelter and no one wanted her. This was a meant to be moment as Dirty Mama Jennifer had been wishing for a dog! Kiowa aka Dirty Dog, now has a loving home and a tribe of awesome Dirty Girls!
I kept telling them that we had 2 more miles to go … they were beginning to doubt! The official trail distance is 29 but with extras and detours we covered 32.75.
THE END! This is the group at the end of day 2 – what a great bunch!
Overall, it was a great adventure. We accomplished something difficult, challenging, enjoyable and strengthening – both physically and emotionally. We can do it! There are a million pictures to include but I have to stop somewhere so this is it! Photo credits to Dirty Girl Lorraine, Dirty Mama Jennifer and possibly a couple of other Dirty Girls!
Thanks to all of the Dirty Girls who joined us for this giant adventure! Thanks to the Dirty Mamas for all of their love and support and to the Dirty Minions for their help throughout the weekend.
See you on the trail! Love each and every one of you for your brave and adventurous determination and overall fabulosity!!
Denise aka Original Dirty Girl aka The Dirty Mutha!
It’s time! We’ve been hiking and moving our bodies for months now and it’s time to go all the way! All the way around the Perry Lake Trail that is! This is a really cool trail and the company can’t be beat! This is NOT a race! Our anticipated pace for the duration is a 30 minute mile. This is an event to celebrate our love of the outdoors while simultaneously celebrating our ability to endure and sustain physical activity for a long time! We will see many interesting sights and enjoy the time with our Dirty compadres! We will spend Columbus Day weekend, October 11th and 12th hiking the distance! This event is open to every Dirty Peep! Dirty Girls, Dirty Dudes and Dirty Teens.
We will begin early Saturday morning by setting up camp at Slough Creek Campground then we will load up the party bus and head for the Old Military Trail Head! We will hike the west side of the trail on Saturday – from The Old Military Trail Head to Slough Creek Campground. Dirty Minions will monitor our camp while we hike, keeping the fire burning at base camp. On the trail, we will have a delicious boxed lunch at the 8 mile mark. We will end at base camp with showers, a fire and a hot dinner! After a great night at base camp, we will wake up, get a good breakfast then hop the party bus back to the Old Military Trail Head to hike the east side of the Perry Lake Trail. We will have another great lunch on the trail. When we get back to base camp, we will break camp and celebrate our accomplishment (then go home and shower!)
This trail includes rocky, hilly steep inclines and declines. There will be brush, poison ivy and bugs. The distance is not the only challenge – a good portion of the trail is decidedly technical in nature. Signing up for this event indicates your understanding of the challenges in terrain, distance and weather. The event will occur regardless of temperature – cancellation will occur only with severe weather.
Dirty Girl Adventures will provide trail support along the way. Guidance, encouragement, lunch, water stops to refill your packs and the assurance that no Dirty Girls will be left behind!
Hikers will need the following gear: quality shoes, layered clothing for both days, hydration pack with AT LEAST 2.o liters of water to start, bug spray, snacks, one fully charged cell phone for each day, camp chair, overnight camping supplies (sleeping quarters, bed roll, etc.), shower supplies and a camera!
