Dreaming of the Grand Canyon?

An Adventure Post from Wild Rose aka Jennifer Woerner, Creative Director and Co-Owner of DGA, LLC. She’s currently at the Grand Canyon!!

Is the Grand Canyon on your bucket list?  Are you thinking about hiking rim to rim?  Or would riding a donkey be more your style?  Do you want to raft the Colorado River through the canyon?  Would you be more comfortable back country camping in a tent or staying at historic Phantom Ranch at the bottom of the canyon? Do you want to see the North Rim or the South Rim?  Or both?

There are many ways to access the Grand Canyon, so if you want to do more than stand on the rim and admire it’s beauty from afar, if you really want to EXPERIENCE the Grand Canyon, start planning now!  It will undoubtedly be an epic adventure, and it takes time to decide between options, and if necessary, gain permits to see this amazing place.

You do not need a permit to hike down into the Grand Canyon.  You only need a permit if you plan to spend the night below the canyon rim.  If you plan to camp below the rim, there are a number of campgrounds along the main corridor trails, but in peak season, there is a great deal of competition for spots.

In order to protect this beautiful canyon, overnight access is limited.  You must plan well in advance and request a permit for a camping spot approximately 4 months in advance. However, due to competition for permits, spots are granted via a random drawing each month. It is not first come, first serve, and you cannot apply early to gain a spot.

During late fall, winter and early spring, it is much easier to gain a permit, but you must be prepared for camping in cooler weather, and expect snow near the rims.  In fact, the North Rim of the Canyon is closed from November to March and the only way to access it is via snowmobile or skis.

If you have back country hiking and camping experience, you could choose a trail that is off the beaten path.  Again, this takes time and research to figure out distances, water sources and safety, given the time of year you plan to go.  You still must apply for a permit, but there is less competition for back   country campsites.

Some people hike rim to rim in one day.  Others hike rim to rim more than once in a day!  If you are in peak physical condition and need a challenge, that would be it! The good news is that you do not need a permit to hike rim to rim in one day. However, be prepared to hike a distance of  24 miles (one way) and experience elevation changes of up to 6,000 feet.

Special trips, such as riding the donkey train, using the Duffel service to get your bags to Phantom Ranch (while you hike down), rafting or staying at Phantom Ranch require advanced planning.  Be ready to plan up to a year in advance (or more)!

I encourage you to look at a trip to the Grand Canyon as an experience, not an achievement.  Yes, I am proud that I hiked rim to rim.  But what is really amazing is that I was able to spend time with my friends and family in an amazing place and create memories that will inspire me for the rest of my life.

Soon, I’m going back, accompanied by my brother and my father, to create more memories, to hike a backcountry trail and to sleep on the banks of the Colorado River.  Start planning now, visit https://www.nps.gov/grca/index.htm  ADVENTURE AWAITS!

Eagle Hike #2 Sunday 2/12/17!

Annually we adventure during the month of February to see some American Bald Eagles and scenic Northeast Kansas in the winter. We will be visiting two different locations near eagle’s nests which should allow us to see Eagles flying and perching in the trees.

This year our Saturday Eagle Hike sold out in under 24 hours!  Yay, so exciting to have so many people ready to GO OUTSIDE!  In fact, we are SO excited that we’ve added a second hike this year!

10649671_10206346185440105_6574592770060376294_n

Eagle Hike #2 is Sunday February 12th.

This hike is not continuous, we will meet at Bobcats Bar and Grill near Ozawkie for check in and a short Eagle info talk, then we will load the Dirty Bus. We will stop at two locations and take a short hike at each in hopes of observing some eagles.

Winter is a great time to observe Eagles and other wildlife or signs of wildlife along the trail. Both locations that we will visit have also provided sightings of deer, turkey, peregrine falcons, wood peckers, terns, ducks and geese as well as other wildlife.

Dirty Girl Adventures has had two “Eagle Hikes” thus far and each has been an ADVENTURE! The first year there was a massive snow storm which turned out to be surprisingly fun! IMG_1440

Everyone was disappointed that we didn’t have a blizzard again last year. 😀 However, we did enjoy a day of hiking and saw several American Bald Eagles. We hiked today and saw eagles at two locations – they are amazing! The fellowship of spending the day together is pretty awesome also!

DSC_0292

In addition to the wildlife, we will be spending the afternoon together enjoying each other and nature. It’s what we do!  A walk in the woods along the river and the lake does a body and soul good!

SONY DSC

We will end the day at Bobcats around 4 with food, drinks and fellowship – time around the campfire seemed potentially chilly!

Basic plan for the day…

12:30 check in at Bobcats Bar and Grill, Ozawkie – Check them out on Facebook

12:45 Eagle Talk

1:00 load the Dirty Bus

Hike and Eagle watch

4:00ish return to Bobcats for dinner/snacks and drinks – these aren’t included in the hike fee

Cost: $30 per person, $24 for club members

Wear: layers, head/face coverings, comfortable shoes and warm socks

Bring: water, snacks

You need to sign up in advance to reserve a spot on this adventure!  Space is limited and events often sell out fast! Check it out in the Dirty Shop.

4th Annual Ass Kicker!

Yes, it’s time to get yer Ass Kicked again! Four years ago, a small group of friends set out for a 20 mile kayak adventure on the Mighty Kaw. Here we are back in the day…. I don’t know why JF MacGyver isn’t in this picture because she was with us … it’s always a good day on the Kaw! We have been so excited to take others with us for a 20 Mile Ass Kickin’ the last few years. Every adventure is a new and different experience!

It was a great idea and we enjoyed the day, but man, were we tired at the end! This adventure is not for the faint of heart – it should be HOT, the water will likely be LOW and the day will be LONG! That being said, it’s not a race! We will chillax on almost every sandbar we pass with time in the water, time to explore and a bit of yoga stretching to keep us limber. This event will last ALLLLLLLLLLL day so plan for no plans before or after. Although, we do recommend a shower followed by a hearty dinner and a glass of wine when you get home!

FAQ – “How long will this take?” ANSWER: As long as it takes! We recommend making NO PLANS for post-paddling. This will take as long as it takes, no rushing just flowing with the day.

What are you paying for?
Use of a kayak, paddle, life jacket and all of the lifting, hauling, planning and coordination needed to make this happen. Renters and Oyo’s are paying for a river guide and experienced safety paddlers who will ensure that your trip is safe and that you receive instruction and support along the way. We will have supplies necessary to provide basic first aid on the river. You will also have the opportunity to ride on the DIRTY GIRL BUS!! For you OYO’s, there will also be a Dirty Minion to guard your gear after you drop it off – remember though, that the lifting, hauling, loading is on you unless you are going to tip the minions!

Our refund policy:

Refunds are given up to one week before the date of the event no questions asked, after that there are no refunds. Dirty Girl Adventures may cancel an event due to weather or conditions, everyone will receive a refund if that is the reason for the cancellation. We will paddle and hike in cool, rainy or snowy conditions. Cancellation only occurs in severe weather or due to other dangerous conditions.

Equipment policy:

You break it, lose it or damage it = you buy it! Kayaks = $350, Paddle = $70, Life Jacket = $10
