Dirty Girls’ Get Away!

head_rearviewThere is exactly one month left to register (Deadline March 16th) for the amazing, first of its kind – Dirty Girls’ Get Away which is scheduled for April 17th, 18th and 19th!  We will be visiting the Lied Lodge in Nebraska City, Nebraska.  It is a gorgeous and comfortable lodge with many amenities!

poolFrom gorgeous rooms, great food, pool, jacuzzi, spa and wines made on site at the Arbor Day Farm! In fact, I’m hoping to participate in the Friday night wine tasting that they offer – $5 for 4 tastes – surely I’ll find one I like!

wine-new-labelWe will spend Friday evening relaxing and socializing in the Lied Lodge. As is usual with us Dirty Girls, the Tribal Gathering and social time will be divine! We will share some life stories and encouragement as we prepare for a day of hiking on Saturday. Our goal is to build you up and encourage you to challenge yourself to enjoy new adventures! Doesn’t this little spot look like a nice place to hang out and chat with some Dirty Girls?

Lounge_Counches_320_000Saturday, after a delicious breakfast, we will carpool to “Nebraska’s best kept secret” Indian Cave State Park!

We will spend Saturday hiking the trails along the Mighty Missouri River.  The hills and bluffs offer excellent views from the 25 miles of trails throughout the park.  The Dirty Mama’s have mapped out a hike that can accommodate the short hiker and the long hiker!  We will enjoy a boxed lunch on the trail (included in your cost and furnished by the Lied Lodge).

I enjoyed a great weekend with my wonderful friends last year which is when the plan for this Dirty Girl Get Away was hatched!  Although we camped, we experienced a pretty cold night and lots of blowing dirt so we thought that it would be well worth it to combine comfort with our outdoor adventure!  The packages that we have created are designed to meet the financial situation of a variety of Dirty Girls.  (This is a Dirty Girl only event – no Dudes – but it is open to both club members and others.) The packages all include lodging, breakfast in the mornings Saturday and Sunday, Saturday lunch and dinner with one beverage.  If you can’t get away on Friday, it is a short 2 hour drive to join us Saturday morning!

For the short hikers, local exploration in Indian Cave State Park includes a variety of pretty cool spots that you can visit with MacGyver Julie while the long hikers keep moving. The day should be beautiful!  After a full day, we will return to the Lied Lodge for some chillaxing and a delicious dinner in the Timber Lodge (instead of a tent!)!

We will provide a really cool commemorative craft during the evening hours as well as some quality social time with a focus on self-care and refreshing your spirit! Sunday morning, we will leisurely enjoy breakfast together, then enjoy a relaxing hike into the Arbor Day Farm Grounds to visit the Treehouse 50 feet in the air!  It looks SO cool!  Then we will all head home, refreshed and rejuvenated (oh, who am I kidding we will most likely be a bit tired from such an awesome time!).

It’s a new year and new ADVENTURES await!

Happy New Year Dirty Peeps!

2014 was full of some excellent adventures and great surprises.  2015 will be even better here at Dirty Girl Adventures!  After a full year of existence, we will be more prepared, better organized and … more creative than ever at getting you and yours outside!

DSCF3119

There are so many great places to visit and so many great people to meet that 2015 will be full of adventure.  We are currently looking forward to our Custom Collage Workshop on January 11th. Pondering our vision for life in 2015, we decided that an inspirational and motivational collage would help us maintain focus on what is good.

10801793_381852155322707_8954351069440448879_nCollaging is creative, fun and a thought process along the way! Dirty Girls who attend Refresh! our Retreat last fall enjoyed creating collages.

We are also really, really looking forward to our April Dirty Girls Get Away  at the fabulous Lied Lodge and gorgeous Indian Cave State Park in Nebraska!  Although it is several months away, the anticipation of a get away weekend in an awesome place with awesome women is already building!

20140328_181452

This is the lobby of the Lied Lodge!  Pretty gorgeous!  It is owned and operated by the Arbor Day Foundation so it seems like a perfect place for a Dirty Girl Get Away!

imgres We started the year off with an excellent “First Day Hike” at Perry State Hiking Biking Trails.  40 Dirty Peeps and Pets came together to start the New Year off on the trail!  Great turn out and great morning to get our blood moving – it was 9*!!  Think about the ways that you can get outside to move, to connect and to enjoy the world this year! 10897750_381739122000677_3761082904389426175_nWhat will you do this year?  My goal is to hike 500 trail miles this year!  I like goals that are positive, motivating and attainable.  (Instead of those annoying goals that essentially say I’m not good enough the way I am right now!)  I’m looking forward to focusing on the people and activities that I truly love and enjoy.  I am cutting out some of the things that I no longer love doing so that I can more fully enjoy the things I love and want to do now.  I acknowledge that even the things we love take work and are sometimes really challenging and miserable but even misery is better when it is attached to something we truly care about and love.  We hope that you are able to find and cherish the people and activities that you love with quality time this year!

We also hope that you will include a plan to come outside with Dirty Girl Adventures this year. We can’t wait to see you!  It’s going to be a great year!

Hot Times: A Kansas River Run SOLD OUT!!

SOLD OUT!

Yes, it’s time for some Hot Times on the Kansas River!  The First Float was in June and the River was fabulous!  A good flow rate and lots of sunshine were ingredients in our day.  Those ingredients combined with great company brought good times to the 48 paddlers who ventured out with Dirty Girl Adventures.  We are looking forward to Hot Times River Run on Sunday July 27th, 2014!

892479_10151835284653593_2017272574_o

We are currently planning to explore a different section of the Kansas River – from the Seward Boat Ramp in Topeka to Rising Sun River Access in Lecompton .  This 12.7 mile long paddle will take 4 – 5 hours depending on the amount of time we choose to dally on the sand bars.  Yoga, anyone?  This section of the river does have a low head dam near the Tecumseh Power Plant – it is easy to go over through a middle section at normal or low river flow rates.  Dirty Girl Adventures will determine the safety of this passage before the Hot Times River Run begins.

Paddlers will need to meet at the Rising Sun River Access to leave their vehicles and catch the standing room only Redy2Party Bus for a ride to the Seward Boat Ramp. Own your own kayak? Plan to drop your gear with the Dirty Minions at Seward then head to Rising Sun for a packed bus ride!

There are  32 single person kayaks and 2 – 2 person tandem kayaks available for the Hot Times River Run.  Seats are first come, first served.  The payment buttons will be removed when the maximum number of people have registered.  A waiting list will be started in case registered paddlers need to cancel.  Refunds will be given for cancellations through July 21st.  After July 21st, refunds will only be given if Dirty Girl Adventures can re-sell your spot.

Dirty Girl’s Day off!

1456006_607173832657359_1876503145_n-520x279What does a dirty girl do on a day off?  Well, in truth, a wide variety of things, some not so exciting BUT sometimes it IS exciting!  This past Sunday, I had the opportunity to compete in the “O” Challenge with my partner and decidedly dirty girl, Shelley.  We have done several Adventure Races together in the past.  We were pretty excited to undertake a new challenge sponsored by Lake Adventures at beautiful Milford Lake Kansas.  What is the “O” Challenge?  It is an orienteering event, using a topographical satellite map marked with UTM points, racers use a compass (no GPS allowed) to locate checkpoints.  In adventure racing you do the same thing but your mode of travel includes trekking, biking and paddling.  Basically, you get a map with places marked on it and you need to get to all of them in any order within a set amount of time.  Lake Milford is beautiful and has some lovely trails…

DSCF4491

The trails were virtually irrelevant for this particular adventure though! We went off road and did a LOT of brush whacking to find our points!  Totally fun!

12093_10152067621088593_868438609_n

A very cool thing about this “extreme sport” is the comradery among the competitors.  We are all competing but, generally, we are also sort of all in it together.  Shelley and I aren’t fast and in this race she caught her toe and pulled a muscle so we were slower than usual.  However, these types of races don’t have to be about speed.  The truth is good navigation skills and perseverance make a difference.   Shelley always asks questions like, “what strategy can we use to find this point?”  Sometimes the strategy is get close and wander around!

We sometimes join up with another team of similar speed and work together.  It is fun to get to know people from different places with the same interests even for a few passing moments in the brush!  We spent some time with a team of guys looking for a couple of points, Lee and Mike.  They were nice and funny (their team name was Nutz in the Water)  it was their second race ever.  We couldn’t find point #14 and we went our separate ways.  Later, they doubled back and found it then told us how close we had been on the first pass.  UGH!  Oh, well!

DSCF4492

It is a challenge to articulate the level of challenge in this type of race when the world is flooded with races that are full of created challenges like mud pits and electric shocks.  I think that some of those races would be fun and all of them would be hard but I really love that this is a “real” challenge.  This challenge is natural and is overcome by strength, endurance and intellect also maybe some luck!  We traveled a theoretical distance of about 13 miles.  We wandered around a bit, not always taking the shortest path so it seems possible that we traveled farther than that.

DSCF4497

This is what a check point looks like.  Can you see it?  It is that orange thing hanging in the middle of the fall colored orangy forest!  Sometimes people steal or remove points like this.  Irritating!  Check point #4 was stolen on this event.  We searched and as we were discussing giving up Charmion (race director) arrived to check it out.  She confirmed that it was missing and left a note for future racers.  Pretty annoying since the checkpoints have a note on them explaining what they are and asking you not to remove them.  Some people are just weenies!

DSCF4480

DSCF4490

DSCF4489

DSCF4499

We tramped through poison ivy, brambles, green briar and up and down hills.  I almost peed my pants when I nearly stepped on a snake!  I screamed and the guys laughed since I had just told them about the Dirty Girls.  (Remember, Dirty Girls can scream at things like snakes and fish jumping into the kayak!)    Shelley was a total trooper since she kept going with the major muscle pull.  We found 19 of 22 points in 6 hours and 21 minutes taking 2nd place in the women’s division.  Pretty exciting!  I love a race that you can win or place with a time in hours instead of minutes!  The Golden Girls beat us because they found that darn #14!  They are pretty awesome navigators!  We had a great time and can’t wait to race again!  It sometimes strikes me as we wander through some tough cedar trees that many people would think we were insane to choose to do this.  Then I smile and laugh and give thanks for the opportunity to be outside using my body and my brain and to meet like minded people of all ages, races, backgrounds and experiences coming together to do the same awesome thing!

DSCF4528DSCF4526

This was the last check point that we found.  It was a good day!  What do you do on your day off?  I hope it is something that you love!!
