Join us for the Spring Fling! Register HERE!

What is the Spring Fling?  It’s an 8 mile hike along the Perry Lake Trail!  The section that we will be hiking on March 28th, includes both fields and woodlands as we travel along the side of Lake Perry.  Below are all the Dirty Peeps who hiked with us on our very first hike last March 2014! We had a great time!  Although we won’t be hiking the same section of the Perry Lake Trail, I bet we will have another great time!  This hike is open to all Dirty Peeps – Dudes, Kids (must be able to hike 8 miles) and, of course, Dirty Girls!  DSCF4631 - Copy

The trail is rough and uneven with mild inclines/declines along the way.  We will expect to travel at a pace of about a 30 minute mile – give or take!  We will pause for snacks, rest and scenic views along the way!

When:  Saturday March 28th, 2015

Time:  Check-in between 9am and 9:30am

Pre-Register by 3-20!  $25 Regular Peeps, $20 Club Members (Includes bus ride, trail guide and support, snacks at the end) REGISTER HERE on the Dirty Shop under Events!  We will hike regardless of cold or snow – cancellation may occur due to wet conditions or severe weather.  Refunds are not available after the 20th as the bus and food will have been paid for by that date!

Where:  The Slough Creek Campground Group Camp Area at Lake Perry!

Wear/Bring:  Plan to wear long pants regardless of temperature.  The Perry Lake Trail is a wilderness trail and there will be brushy sections.  Bring water and snacks for along the trail   If you don’t have a hydration pack, a string bag or small back pack would be handy for water and a few good snacks.  Remember, we will be hiking 8 miles, that’s a lot of calories and energy expended.  You need both protein and some sugar to keep your energy flowing – good protein bars, trail mix, an apple!

The Basic Plan:  We will have feet on the trail by 10am and we should be relaxing around the campfire with some food and BYO beverages by 2ish. Dirty Girl Adventures will furnish a variety of snacks and water at the Campfire.  Plan to bring snacks and water for the hike!  You may choose to bring adult beverages to enjoy at the end of the hike.  Please plan to bring a chair for around the campfire!

A variety of shirts will be available on the day of the event!

Last year it was pretty chilly – who knows what this year will bring!

DSCF4642 Scenes from the trail 2014! It is already greener than last year was!

DSCF4641

We will be doing a different 8 mile section of the Perry Lake Trail than we did last March.  This section will take us from the north end of the trail back to Slough Creek Campground for hanging out by the fire.  We will make a stop at this awesome rock beach!

Dirty Girls went ALL the Way!

It was a rainy week.  The ground was wet and the air was cold.  It was time to hike 29 miles in two days!  This was a challenge and a joy enjoyed by Dirty Girls and other slightly strange people!  Joking aside, it turned out to be a gorgeous weekend!  All told, with some extra steps included, the fitbit wearing Dirty Girls agreed that our total mileage for the weekend was 32.75 miles – 18 on Saturday and 14.75 on Sunday!!  WooHoo!  Here are the pictures and a couple of cool stories to go along with them! Here are some pictures and highlights from our weekend!  The Redy2Party Bus picked us up right on time at 8:30 Saturday morning.  It was a crisp and cool morning, but bright and beautiful!

DSCF5316

We had a great view of Perry Lake as we hiked the trail along the edge of the lake. We observed many migratory birds, including my favorite American White Pelican aka Black Wing-tipped Pelican.  They are super cool!  Check them out here!  Their wingspan ranges from 6 to 9 feet!

DSCF5320

Those of us at the front of the line enjoyed a few special sights.  First, I fell within the first 10 minutes on the trail in an amazing and dramatic crash.  WOW!  The bruise is still really painful.  Luckily, I’m the Dirty Mutha so I kept going!  Second, we saw two foxes running and playing in the woods.  When they saw us, they changed direction rapidly!  They were awesome.  (I had my camera in my hand and didn’t even raise it to my face!)

Dirty Girls! Monkey and Gadget Girl!

These are just a few of the brave and adventurous women who are members of tribe Dirty Girl!  They looked a little more fresh and energetic at the beginning of the adventure that they did at the end but they seemed proud, confident and accomplished event though they were blistered and tired out!  Most were covered with stick tights, poison ivy oils and some small amount of sweat along with their glory!

These brave girls came out for their first adventure for a 29 mile hike! Now THAT is amazing! Great getting to know them on the trail!

Dirty GIrls make great friends!

This is one of the gajillion interesting, weird and pretty cool fungus we saw along the trail. It is spiky and cool.   It’s a puffer type fungi and when dry it will poof out spores.

This cool flat grass is Inland Sea Oats.  Pretty!

DSCF5328The blue flashes mark the trail.  If there are two stacked blue spots, they mark a turn.  This trail is maintained by volunteers so while we hiked, we sprayed new signs along the path.  I also have lovely blue overspray on my camera and watchband!

DSCF5373Dirty Girls had time for conversation and contemplation both while maintaining a steady pace over a rough and tough terrain.  The diversity of our group is what makes it great.  Women from all over northeast Kansas joined us for this adventure, coming together with determination and humor to enjoy the weekend together.

One of the things I have loved the most about this amazing adventure has been meeting and getting to know so many determined, adventurous, interesting, caring, motivated women.  I have enjoyed quality friendships with a few women in my lifetime but this summer I have been able to add many more – more than I ever thought I would find in my lifetime.  Some, I haven’t even begun to know but I can tell that they have much to offer.  I am eager to continue to grow these friendships.  They are enriching, energizing and inspiring to me!

This awesome dog – tribal name Dirty Dog – joined us for most of day 2.  We attempted to track down her original owner and left information at the shelter and no one wanted her.  This was a meant to be moment as Dirty Mama Jennifer had been wishing for a dog!  Kiowa aka Dirty Dog, now has a loving home and a tribe of awesome Dirty Girls!

10704184_345259332315323_7522841142142303499_nI kept telling them that we had 2 more miles to go … they were beginning to doubt! The official trail distance is 29 but with extras and detours we covered 32.75.

Overall, it was a great adventure.  We accomplished something difficult, challenging, enjoyable and strengthening – both physically and emotionally.  We can do it!  There are a million pictures to include but I have to stop somewhere so this is it!  Photo credits to Dirty Girl Lorraine, Dirty Mama Jennifer and possibly a couple of other Dirty Girls!

Thanks to all of the Dirty Girls who joined us for this giant adventure!  Thanks to the Dirty Mamas for all of their love and support and to the Dirty Minions for their help throughout the weekend.

See you on the trail!  Love each and every one of you for your brave and adventurous determination and overall fabulosity!!

Another 8 Miles Recapped!

Better late than never!  I have been remiss in writing up some adventure stories over the past few months!  April 6th was a glorious weather day and the perfect day for our second 8 mile section of the Perry Lake Trail.  We started at Hog Holler Saloon to check in and load up the Party Hike Bus and head to the trailhead for the day.  We enjoyed a warm and gorgeous spring day along the trail.  53 hikers took the trail for this adventure!  Over hill and dale we tramped through the woods of Northeast Kansas.

DSCF4797

Dirty Girls, Dirty Dudes and Dirty Kids discovered the great outdoors, new friends and interesting sights along the trail.  The terrain was pretty mild in comparison to the previous section of the trail so we moved pretty quickly, covering the 8 miles in less than three hours!

DSCF4790

Dirty Girls and their Dirty Peeps don’t give up.  Instead, they work to know their own needs and pace.  It is important to challenge ourselves to improve but it is also important to acknowledge and celebrate the accomplishments along the way.  If your distance is 1 mile, 3 miles or 8 miles you deserve a WOO WOO for getting your butt off the couch, out of the house and onto the trail!  Keep it moving!  Catch up with a Dirty Peep and get it moving!

DSCF4806

Check out these gorgeous and adventurous Dirty Kids!  The rock beach along the trail is a highlight of this section.  I am planning to spend a bit of time relaxing here this summer, possibly with my kayak!

DSCF4801

The Perry Lake Trail is maintained by a volunteer organization called The Kansas Trail Council.  What a great group of workers!  We are loving the trail and the adventure their work allows us! Plus, these bridges are a great photo opp!

DSCF4810

DSCF4817

The coolest thing about a Dirty Girl Adventure is that it is full of fabulous!  We are all supportive of each other, accepting of differences and invested in quality time for ourselves and each other.  We are not just exercising, we are exploring!  There is quite a bit of WOOO WOO-ing along the trail as well as random guessing as to how far we have traveled!  We were happy to have a couple of support stops along the tail to refill our water and ring the cow bell to celebrate our progress.  Thanks to the Dirty Minions and the Token Male!  It’s always nice to have support and encouragement along the journey!

DSCF4824

While we were at Hog Holler, we enjoyed a variety of food and beverages and CHECK THIS OUT!!  We are on the register with a 20% Discount!  It’s like we’re famous or something!  Thanks Clay for the Dirty Girl Discount on event days!  Hog Holler is a great venue!  It was very rewarding to be greeted and cheered by various folks when we arrived.  Two Dirty Girls joined up after watching the fun times as we rolled into Hog Holler!  Yay!  The Dirty Girls can’t wait for some hot summer days on the porch post kayaking!

Stay tuned for more great Adventure Stories from Dirty Girl Adventures!  Next up, the Down and Dirty 3 Mile – and oh, what a story that is!

Join us for The East Side Eight! Deadline May 2nd!!

Here are the details for the May 10th, East Side Eight!  Read this and sign up asap!  Pre-registration is mandatory!  It should be another GREAT Dirty Girl event!  We can’t wait to see you again or meet you for the first time!  Come outside with us!

DSCF4819

Dirty Girls and other Dirty Peeps are invited to hike yet another section of the 29 mile Perry Lake Trail. We will meet at Slough Creek Campground to load the Hikers Party Bus and head for the trail. This east side section of the trail will take us over hill and dale alongside beautiful Lake Perry. We will see some new greenery and blooms as spring comes to Kansas.

DSCF1958[3]The trail is occasionally rough and rocky with steep inclines and declines. It will also take us through some sections that are brushy or beginning to be brushy as spring blooms and grows. One short section is down a “no maintenance road” which is rough and rutted. This is not a run. It is a hike. My anticipation is that we will travel approximately 20-30 minutes per mile. Please consider your fitness level before signing up. If you can’t hike 3 miles in 90 minutes then you might struggle with 8 miles in four hours. We will stop to sight see and rest as we see fit. This event is open to Dirty Girls, Dirty Guys and Dirty Teens. When we arrive at our campground in Slough Creek Park where we will enjoy refreshments and relax while reveling in the glory of our accomplishment!

The Half-Day Hike Adventure!

The Half-Day Hike turned out to be AWESOME!!  Since it was the first event that I charged people to attend, I was SUPER anxious that it all went smoothly.  First, I was totally bummed about the Federal Government shutdown.  The US Army Corps of Engineers is closed down which meant that I wouldn’t be able to get the key to the gate to drive up the HUGE hill to set up Dirty Girl Camp.  I was scrambling to think of a different way to make it work.  My dirty girl compatriots were brainstorming.  Julie aka MacGyver and I met at the trail head to the Perry Lake Trail on Tuesday and confirmed that the gate was locked.  We worked out a plan that involved Julie bringing her 4-wheeler and driving stuff up and down the hill.  Hassle… we arrived Saturday afternoon to get set up and relax a little around the fire after a few million trips on the quad and… THE GATE WAS OPEN!!  Yay!!  I rushed up and unloaded then went back to ensure I wasn’t locked in and thankfully, nope.  Magically, the gate was open all weekend!!

Saturday evening Jenn, Julie and I set up camp and relaxed.  It was lovely! I dumped bleach on the dirty pit toilet bathroom floor and washed down the walls (ugh) and we foofified the area a bit.

IMG_20131012_173631

The kids enjoyed camp.  Dirty Girls have Dirty Kids!  Big and little, they love a good fire!  It was a great fall evening!  Perfect Kansas weather!

20131012_172803 20131012_172948

Sunday dawned bright and beautiful!  The day was a perfect fall day with gorgeous fall colors and crispy air.  11 Dirty Girls were registered plus me and my wonderful Camp Maiden, Macgyver Julie!  Big, excitement!  Sadly, three of the 11 were unable to attend at the last minute – a family emergency, a health emergency and a failure to read the calendar!  Doh!  (The health emergency has since been healed!)  Dirty Girl Camp was looking awesome and the fire was toasty!  We headed out on our 10ish mile hike, turned out to be closer to 9, in good spirits and covered in Deep Woods Off!

DSC_0269

It is wonderful to gather with Dirty Girls for a day on the trail.  Our group spanned a wide variety of ages and careers as well as fitness levels.  Everyone has something to share; thoughts, interests and insights.  Women can join together and share, communicate and encourage each other rapidly – a beautiful aspect of a Dirty Girl Adventure!  The more we hike; the more we know each other.  What a great way to get to know women worth knowing!

20131013_150916

The trail was over hill and dale, woody and rocky with gorgeous scenery.  There was SO much poison ivy!!  It is actually pretty – yellow, orange and red this time of year BUT oh, my!  To date, I haven’t heard of a Dirty Girl who has broken out with excessive poison ivy.  WEIRD!  It seemed like we were fated to be covered in it!  Despite the major doses of bug spray, some Dirty Girls have been a little itchy.  Chiggers are the likely culprits.  Boo!  Dirty Girls don’t like chiggers!

DSC_0278

We moved more quickly than I thought that we would, speedy Dirty Girls.  A couple of Girls bit the dust… or, more exactly, crashed to the rocky ground on their knees.  Owie!  Happily, Dirty Girls are scrappy and they were able to keep on going!  We iced them down for a bit at Dirty Girl Camp.  We reached camp, shucked out of our poison ivy clothes and grabbed cold beverages to chillax around the fire.

DSC_0289

Considering that I’m a Dirty Girl and NOT a caterer, the dinner turned out pretty good!  We had some pulled pork, giant baked potatoes with the works, salad and dark chocolate brownies with fresh raspberries for our post hike meal.  Yummy.  It was, overall a good day.  I’d say that we were all feeling great and that we could have easily gone a couple of more miles!

DSC_0291

I am feeling so excited and pleased with Dirty Girl Adventures and the adventure that it is bringing into my life!  Great times, great women and an unending excuse to go outside and love it!  The next event, the Dirty Girl Night Hike will be a blast!  Five miles in the dark followed by a bonfire down by the lake; Dirty Dudes invited to come along!  If you can’t join us, go outside wherever and whenever you can!  Take a look around the gorgeous world and take a deep breath and hit the trail!
